Holding the sun
2009, Charcoal & pencil
This drawing is one of a series I have been exploring. It is about my wish that it will always be possible for us to feel the sun on our faces. It is a comment on the insidious nature of depression to steal away our lives. I am also hoping for a future where everyone, regardless of ability is able to engage with the arts. The figure in this drawing is ‘performing’ a visual experience of the sun for another. I am also exploring the idea of taking risks, a right that is often curtailed for some by overprotective carers and welfare system. The person in this chair may be perilously close to falling off this impossible pedestal - but it will be in the name of art and life!
About the artist
I am an artist born out of a brain injury at my first Saturn return, which changed how I understand and sense the world and myself. My art is very much influenced by a sense of belonging and place, a spiritual practice of creation and connection, a journey of healing and a determination to celebrate what we have here and now. I am also inspired by the challenges we face both individually and globally. It is not just about the burdens that dare us but also the gifts that can surprise us.
