Beyond the First Steps
2009, Digital photography, patchwork, quilting
My composition depicts the rise of assistive technologies to help disabled people get past those first dark, difficult steps. No matter what the disability, there must be a period of re-adjustment, and then the discovery of technologies that can help. My hope is that more and more systems are put into practice to ease the lives of the disabled, not just to cope with day to day activities, but to soar and create beyond the bounds of expectation. The first steps are dark, and difficult, but with technology, things get lighter, easier, and even golden.
About the artist
Since the year 2000 I have been an enthusiastic quiltmaker, branching out into textile art when necessary. Although my early occupations include teaching (Physical Education) and Clinical Massage, my creative talents now enjoy free range through the luxury of retirement. I have recently had work accepted for the One Step Further Exhibition (Victorian Quilters), and am thrilled to have been included in this exhibition.
