Competency Based Training - a new way of doing things

To develop competency based training industry representatives from all levels were invited to attend discussions where they were asked to really think about the work that was done in the sector and break it down into tasks. Research was then undertaken to fully understand what knowledge, skills and attitudes a worker needed to be able to do these tasks well. The main question asked was: What did it take for a worker to be competent at their job?

The next step was to then write training materials to match what industry wanted their workers to be competent at. This training was developed as Units of Competency. The Units of Competency were put together to make a qualification. So if a worker is to be granted a qualification that states they are competent to do a particular job, they would have to demonstrate a particular set of Units of Competency.

In the Disability sector in Victoria the first widely used competency based training qualification of this sort was the Certificate IV in Community Services (CIVICS).
