Unit of Competency - an Example
This is a Unit of Competency that is used for training and assessment in the Certificate III in Disability Work and the Certificate IV in Disability Work.
There are five parts to the competency, which are all marked .
The first line shows the Code of the Unit of Competency – all Units have a code and it is used for recognising the Unit quickly, and for keeping records.
The Title of the Unit of Competency also appears in the first line. This is the name of the Unit and describes what it is about.
The Unit Descriptor is on the next line and it describes the purpose of the Unit of Competency.
The Elements of the Competency set out what someone needs to demonstrate to show that they are competent in the Unit.
The Performance Criteria break the element down into more detail about what needs to be demonstrated. They show what knowledge, skills and attitudes need to be shown. They also tell the circumstances when these must be shown.

- An understanding of key issues facing people with disabilities and their carers is demonstrated
- The context of policy, regulatory, legislative and legal requirements as they apply to the area of disability work is demonstrated
- A commitment to access and equity principles is demonstrated
- Personal values and attitudes regarding disability are taken into account when planning and implementing work with people, with disabilities
- An understanding of the differences that specific disabilities may have on clients is demonstrated. This will include acquired and developmental disabilities

- Demonstrate the capacity to support rights, interests and needs of people with disabilities

- An understanding of strategies that assist in people with disabilities to exercise their rights and independence is demonstrated
- Different client requirements are acknowledged
- Legal responsibilities and duty of care are complied with
- Situations which may pose a health or safety issues are reported according to organisational procedures
- Different models for working in the sector are applied to meet client needs
