Why Use a COMPETENCY JOB PROFILE?
Example Scenario
Your organisation provides day placement for people with intellectual disabilities and you constantly need new ATSS staff because many of the staff you employ don’t last very long. Even though you explained the job carefully in the interview you have been told:
- If the applicants had known what they would really be doing they wouldn’t have accepted the job, or
- By other staff who say the new staff member is just not suitable, or
- There are complaints from the people with disabilities and their carers about the attitude of the new staff member.
Your Position Descriptions have not been updated for five years, so you talk to your staff about what they actually do during an average week and match that list of tasks with the Units of Competency in the FIELD Competency Job Profile – ATSS Instructor Band 2.
Using the template, you adapt the generic Competency Job Profile and remove the Unit of Competency, HLTCSD5A - Assist with client movement. None of your people require assistance with mobility. You decide to include the Unit of Competency TDTC897A – Drive coaches and buses, which you found under the Job Title, Bus Driver, because you want the new staff member to be responsible for the maintenance of the bus and this TDT897A includes an Element on maintenance.
You now have your own Competency Job Profile for the position.
You use your own Competency Job Profile to create a new Position Description using the FIELD Position Description template. You then use your Competency Job Profile to write a new advertisement for the local paper and radio station. When people respond to these advertisements you send them a copy of your new Position Description with the application form.
After you have short-listed the applicants you decide how you will assess and choose the best applicants. You decide to use a behavioural interview. You look at your Competency Job Profile and write questions based on the most important competencies for your job.
The Competency Job Profile you created has been used three times in this process. Later you will use this Competency Job Profile during the induction period and when you have your supervisory sessions with the new staff member.
