Templates to use with competency job profiles

Competency Self-Assessment Template

Step 1.

Take your Position Description and create a table of the Units of Competency it contains. If your Position Description does not use Units of Competency you will need to review your tasks and responsibilities and match them to Units of Competency. See To understand a new or existing job.

Step 2.

Look at each Unit of Competency and it Elements. Think about how well it applies to your role. Ask yourself a range of questions. Some questions you might ask yourself include:

  • 'Are you doing this now?’
  • ‘Could I be doing this?’
  • ‘Does the person I support want me to work this way?
  • Does the organisation believe this is important?
  • ‘Do I really understand what this means on a day to day basis?

Step 3.

Indicate the rating that best describes your level of skill for each Unit of Competency listed below.

The ratings are:

  1. Not applicable – This competency does not apply to my job.
  2. No competency – I am not competent in any of the elements of this competency and require training and supervision.
  3. Mostly competent – I am competent in most elements of this competency but still require some supervision and assistance.
  4. Competent – I am competent in all the elements of this competency and can perform the work required unsupervised.
  5. Supervise others – I am able to supervise others performing this competency.
  6. Train others – I am able and qualified to train others in this competency.

Step 4

Follow up with your supervisor. Talk to your supervisor about your ratings. Find out about learning opportunities. Check out the FIELD Events Calender and contact your local TAFE.
